These bronze spoons or ladles feature a handle that has been carved in the form of a seated indigenous figure and horse.

Spoons such as these were not a household everyday item. Instead, they would have been used exclusively for ceremonial purposes, possibly related to wedding festivities or coming-of-age rituals. Coming from the Ifugao Province, Luzon, Philippines, and made around the end 19th / begin 20thC The smaller ancient Ifugao spoon is wonderfully conceived. The finely carved bowl is surmounted by a Bulul figure in classic seated position. The Bulul figure has great strength wearing an old copper torque around its neck. The patina is extremely deep from generations of ceremonial use.

It measures 6.50 inches or 16.5 cm, weighs 128 grams. The other an Intricate carving of a horse used by the Ifugao tribe in the Banaue Region of the Cordilleras, Philippines. It measures 8.00 inches or 20 cm, weighs 170 grams.

As is the nature of vintage items, it is often the case they have seen use and been well loved by families in their previous life. In buying vintage, you will find scratches, scuffs, different coloured patina or other 'evidence' of the items previous use. We don't see these issues as “flaws”. We feel this adds to the charm, history and character of our items, and gives them something special that contemporary items lack. We always do our best to describe and document items accurately, to point out any big issues with them.
